Despite Teo Cruz send Fadi Chehade a warning letter about China’s control over the freedom of speech, there is a doubt if its involvement is seen as a conflict of interest.
Perhaps you remember or not, but Chehade has joined an advisory committee of the WIC known as the Wuzhen Summit, as co-chair. This conference is organized with the only purpose to speed up China’s agenda of national sovereignty regarding the Internet.
It seems is not a very appreciated conference neither by the Chinese government, nor by the Reporters Without Borders. With less international participation and an organized boycott in 2015 edition you can see which is the reality.
Although Fadi Chehade replied to the rumours about him, specifying he is just involved personally and the meeting will happen at the mid of 2016, after he leaves ICANN, and that he stays committed to ICANN, Cruz does not believe a word.
“ Your participation as a co-chair of the committee raised concerns about a personal conflict of interest while you serve as the Chief Executive Officer of ICANN under contract with the United States Government.” (Teo Cruz)
In his attempt to prove Fadi Chehade represents in a way or another a conflict of interest through his behavior and to make him recognize he acts without his board of directors approval, he expressed 9 questions.
Cruz is convinced that the IANA transition, topic discussed at Wuzhen, will open the door to Russia, China and other country that intends to restraint free speech. This point of view is shared by US republican politicians and Cruz is considered a potential front-runner for the Republican assignment for the presidential race.
The letter, where Teo Cruz demands answers from Fadi Chehade, was as well signed by the Republican senators Michael Lee and James Lankford. At the end of March Fadi Chehade will leave his post at ICANN.
